The first vitamin that should be noted in regards to problems if you take too much of it is folic acid. It has been shown that not getting enough folic acid increases a man’s risk of getting colorectal cancer. There are mandates from the United States government that determine how much folic acid can be used within certain products. Now, there is also research that show getting overloaded with folic acid over years will increase a man’s risk of getting colorectal and prostate cancer. It is important that you don’t take over 1,000 micrograms of folic acid in one day. You must pay close attention to this as there are certain cereals with about 400 micrograms of folic acid in just a serving. Most people would eat more than one serving of cereal for breakfast so be on the lookout for this. If you are eating those cereals, taking a vitamin and eating pastas, you are going to have more than 1,000 micrograms of folic acid. If you want to prevent this, make sure any vitamin you take has fewer than 400 micrograms in it and eat cereals that have minimal folic acid. Some examples of those cereals would be Total and Special K.

You also need to pay attention to how much selenium you are getting. Research shows almost beyond a doubt that selenium is helpful in reducing the risk of getting some cancers. However, studies and other research shows that those who take 200 micrograms of selenium a day for about 8 to 9 years are 3.5 times as likely to develop diabetes than people who aren’t taking a selenium supplements. If you are taking a vitamin be sure it contains fewer than 100 micrograms.

Vitamin A

Today it is also important to note that you even need to pay attention to how much Vitamin A you have every day. You may know that have a deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to health issues. The great news is that there aren’t very many men who are low in this vitamin. Now, studies do show that having over 1667 IU per day of Vitamin D will increase risks of hip fractures if you fall. If you want the same health benefits Vitamin A offers but you already meet your limit, you can substitute with beta-carotene instead. When you get beta-carotene, your body is taking in one thing and turning it into Vitamin A later without any of the damage.

There is such a thing as too much of a vitamin. Keep this in mind as you remember what you learned above. When you are getting your vitamins or tracking the vitamins you have, be sure to remember how much of these vitamins you are supposed to have and what numbers you should not go over.
